Monte Gordo Train Station and Railway

Monte Gordo train station is part of the Algarve regional railway that extends from Vila Real in the east to Lagos in the west. Monte Gordo is possibly the quietest and smallest of the stations along the railway and has no ticket office or ticket machines and all train tickets must be purchased from the train conductor. Train travel is the recommended means of travel for long distance journeys along the Algarve coastline. This guide will provide an overview of Monte Gordo station and details of some of the useful departures.

Where is Monte Gordo Train Station?

As with many stations along the Algarve railway the stations are not actually close the relevant towns and Monte Gordo is no exception. Monte Gordo train station is approximately 1km from the edge of the town and 1.5km from the beach front.

To reach the station follow the main pedestrian strip (the Rua Pedro Alvares Babral) north from the casino, at the first roundabout to the rear of the hotel complex go straight over. This road leads to the N125, at the roundabout junction with the N125 go straight over for a second time. The station is a further 200m at the end of the road. From the station to Monte Gordo it is very straight forward and well signed. The walk takes 10-15 minutes and the route is flat.

Train or Bus from Monte Gordo

Bus travel from Monte Gordo offers more frequent services and a great range of local destinations but for longer journeys a connection is often required, usually at Faro. There are fewer train services but travelling by train is more relaxed and enjoyable. Train travel is cheaper than the same corresponding bus. In summary use buses for local trips, eg Vila Real, Castro Marim and use trains for longer journeys, eg Tavira, Faro, Lagos and Portimão. For train travel from Monte Gordo always be sure of departure times as services so infrequent.

The Algarve railway is a regional line and seats cannot be pre-booked and there is no need for reservations as there is always plenty of spares seats. The main exception are trains heading from the Algarve to Lisbon or the north, these train tickets have to be reserved and this can be done at any manned train station. The northern inter-city trains connect with the Algarve regional line at Faro in the east and Tunes in the west.

Monte Gordo train station and railway provides many useful connections to the Algarve west of the resort town. The following fares stated where correct for 2014, under 25s can get a 25% discount and pensioners can claim a 50% reduction on the proof of valid ID.

Tavira is a pretty fishing village which makes for an enjoyable day trip from Monte Gordo, there are limited services but enough to allow for a day trip. A single ticket costs €2.45 and a return costs €4.90.

Faro is the historic and administrative centre of the Algarve and is a good destination for a 2 night stay. The length of the journey makes it impractical to visit as a day trip. Faro station is the main connection for trains from the Algarve to the north of Portugal. Faro is also the location of the main international airport but it is not close to the city and requires a taxi ride (€ 10-15 depending on the time of travel). A single to Faro from Monte Gordo costs € 5.00.

Albufeira is the largest resort town of the eastern Algarve and is very similar to Monte Gordo. The train station is not close to the resort centre. An adult single costs €7.55.

Lagos is the best resort of the Algarve but is at the opposite end to Monte Gordo, the train journey takes around 2 and a half hours. Adult single costs € 10.35.
